Thinking it was unusual for the Captain to be conjoining with a lesser life form, Idi closed the book.

“Are you due upstairs soon?” Citra asked noting the ahman had been here for some time.

“Yes, I was just leaving, thank you.” Wanting to read more, the servant stowed the small book into the apron pocket.

The Librarian nodded as Idi left the room.

Emperor Amado began studying the processing reports on the harvest. Not having DiLane here to advise on what would be done was most distressing.

Litha, the Second Consort, hesitated behind the doorway. She glanced right then left to make sure no one was in the hallway to hear as she entered Amado’s study.

“Eh? Litha, my dear, you come to see me so soon?” the ruler smiled leaning back into the desk chair.

“Yes, my Lord. I have come to ask you something important.” Litha stepped closer. “I believe that after last night you should make me Empress.”

“You? You aren’t fit to be the cook’s assistant. No, your place is Second Consort until DiLane is returned to me.

“But you conjoined with me last night. That has to have some meaning,” Litha cried leaning over the desk with hands pressing the edge.

“Why? That was just a fun distraction. Go along. I’ve other matters to take care of.”

“Uggh!” The Consort growled. Litha’s arms were straight down as the fists tightened in frustration.

The guards, hearing the commotion, ran into the study to hear Litha speaking.

“Someday someone will kill you and Verdock will be in power,” Litha yelled.

“Ser?”

“Take Litha back to the Consort’s room.”

Pulling the hem away, Litha resigned and jerked an arm away from the guard.

“Take your hands off me. I’ll go on my own.”

“What’s going on here?” Verdock questioned appearing in the doorway.

“Nothing—just a minor disagreement. Please come in, Verdock. I’ve been meaning to ask you about Ben.

“What now? Is that one to live in this castle with us?” the principate expressed in frustration.

Verdock, who was four years younger than Amado, slumped into a chair.

“No, I just want to let you know that I have given Ben a higher position in the mill.” Amado clasped both hands together on top of the desk.

“Why tell me? Changes only happen around here when you give the order.” Verdock leaned forward in the chair, placing both hands down upon the knees.

“I also want to emphasize that your gathering of the workers has become too harsh. If they want to be here, they will produce, if not, you will have trouble with them. You need to treat these people with respect. You will get more work out of them. Unfortunately, I had to order more relaxing agents to calm them down yesterday.”

“Bah! You are weak. One of these days those people will come after you. It’s time for my patrols to make sure they go to work. You should thank me for all that I do for you and this world.” Verdock rose from the chair, Verdock left the study stomping down the hallway.

A servant passed the petrolian who was heading toward a small locked room where medicines were kept.
